Mutation Series
This series of artworks will explore the fundamental change in the use and role of photographs in shaping societal discourse and preserving historical 'reality'. In the pre-digital age, photographs were one of the primary vehicles for collecting, preserving and recalling of memories and events that were considered valuable and worth documenting for history. With photography moving completely digital over the past decade, and the dominance of social media in people’s lives now, photographs have become the main tool for instantaneous ‘status updates’, news dissemination and the interpretation of events from multiple points of view. Once shared, most photographs now have fulfilled their utility for the individuals, and are rarely seen again once new events start trending. The photographic preservation and recall of events and their interpretation, once the domain of documentary photography and newsprint to be viewed and analysed years after the events, has now moved to reviewing Facebook and Twitter feeds of people and organisations and, presumably, trawling through masses of photographs and reportage stored on the web at some future date. Societal memories (or history) in the 20th century was created and recalled through stories told with old photographs, by authoritative media organisations or personalities. The online reporting and analysis of any event, preserved for ever, is now a collection of interpretations and views from multiple sources. With the death of print, and the democratisation of 'news', what will form the basis of documented history in the future?
